Rosie Stano is a versatile flute player from Hertfordshire. She began playing the flute aged 10 partly because all her friends played it and partly because playing an instrument meant missing P.E. Despite training as a classical player, Rosie has always had a strong disposition towards the “dark side” of jazz and at 14 began jazz piano lessons. Shortly after, she started to take a keen interest in composition and joined Bob Power's band (now known as "Hat 5") based in St. Albans. Initially inspired by the playing of flautists such as Hubert Laws on Stevie and Quincy tracks and the writing of Herbie Hancock and Sammy Nestico, Rosie also wrote a bit for the band.
In 2008, armed with four Jamey Abersold books on "how to play jazz" and a slightly broken flute, Rosie joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO). After receiving a highly appreciated ten pounds for mainly singing Bill Ashton originals and generally playing out of time during fiendish solis in front of approximately eight pensioners and a dog, Rosie decided to pursue big band jazz further.
After regularly depping in the band for several years, Rosie officially held the NYJO flute chair from 2013 to 2016 and now enjoys gigging with Bill Ashton's Graduates big band for NYJO Alumni. Performing highlights with NYJO have included being featured in a Sky Arts Christmas TV broadcast alongside Clare Teal, with Gregory Porter at Buckingham Palace, a partnership tour to Germany with the BuJazzo, performing alongside Jacqui Dankworth, Jason Yarde and Mark Nightingale as part of the 2013 Gateshead Jazz Festival, four annual residencies at Ronnie Scott’s and the London Jazz Festival and featuring on NYJO’s current album “Fifty” recorded at Air Lyndhurst Studios.
Since joining the orchestra and discovering that pretty much every badly copied/ridiculously hard/absolutely burning flute feature had been written or at least recorded at some point by the incredible Gareth Lockrane, Rosie began to have lessons with the flute maestro who has massively influenced her playing.
After leaving school, Rosie furthered her studies at the University of Southampton and completed a Music degree specialising in jazz&pop performance and commercial composition in the summer of 2012 under the tuition of Gareth Lockrane, Daniel Mar-Molinero, Andrew Fisher and Matthew Scott. During her three years at Southampton, Rosie has had the honour to play with legends such as Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor, Dune Music artists, Soweto Kinch and Abram Wilson and New York players, Ben Allison, Rudy Royston and Jim Snidero.
Whilst studying at Southampton, Rosie took advantage of exploring the alto flute, bass flute and piccolo and was also an active member of the department performing in the Symphonic Wind Orchestra, the University Jazz Orchestra (SUJO), the Contemporary Music Ensemble the Progression Ensemble and with her own septet formed of her Southampton coursemates. Outside of the department, Rosie was regularly invited to sit in with various local groups such as Latin ensemble, Panama and the Darren Vernall blues band.
More recently, Rosie has been touring UK festivals with folk, roots and World music artists including Najam Sheraz and Panama.
Rosie is a Jupiter European Endorsement Artist and a Trevor James Artist.
